ITEM 16347

Ceremonial cloth, tampan pasisir (fragment)

Paminggir people, Lampung
17th early 19th century
Cotton; supplementary weft
70 x 38 cm / 27.5 x 15 in

The iconography of this textile is extraordinary, rich with human figures, sails, even an animal seen upside down at the top of the image. It probably represents a wedding, where the bride and groom are viewed in the central pavilion. An exceptionally rare and interesting ritual cloth.
