Pectoral with Equestrian Figures 30997

Savu, Indonesia

19th Century or earlier
2x2.5 in/5x6 cm

A copper repoussé pectoral found on the island of Savu, depicting confronting horses and riders in a linear petroglyphic style. Between the horses could be a turtle or another animal form. This object may be identified by its construction as being later than the Bronze Age, but could be of any time during the second Millenium. It is clearly symbolic but of unknown significance. A companion piece is in the permanent collection of the musée du quai Branly.
