Chief's Pectoral 10702

Moluccas or Timor

19th Century or earlier

5.5 in/14 cm diameter  80 grams

A heavy, finely hammered gold disk of chiefly authority, these pieces were handed down as ancestral heirlooms but owing to the classicism of form they are impossible to date precisely. However, scholars feel that much of the gold could have been already in place through pre-European spice trade by the 15th/16th Century.
