Tapuva'e Stilt Step

Marquesas Islands, Polynesia

18th Century
Ex Alain Schoffel, ex private French Collection
15 in/38 cm

A classical tiki, probable stone carved, with extra large eyes and deep tattoos, most likely taken back to Europe by an early voyager passing through Central Polynesia.

In former times, Marquesan men would joust on stilts, displaying feats of strength and balance.
