Adu Zatua Ancestor Figure
Wood, trade cloth
19th/very early 20th Century, reportedly from an old German Missionary Museum, acquired from van Bussel Gallery, circa 1987

16.5 in/42 cm

The expression on the face of this figure displays an early stylization. The genitals of this male ancestor were possibly neutered presumably by the missionaries . The aged varnish patina suggests that piece has been in Europe since the 19th Century.
