Red and Blue Kelim

Konya area, Central Anatolia, Turkey

Wool; tapestry weave

18th Century

99 x 60 in/251.5 x 152.5 cm

One of the finest early kelims of its type to come to light, this piece displays a special sensitivity to the artistic integration of color juxtaposition and graphic design. As a general rule, the earlier the weaving, the greater the dye discipline, which is certainly borne out in this case. The saturation of the madder red and indigo blue could not be richer. The simplicity of the design can be associated with geometric patterns found decorating Neolithic pots dating as early as the 3rd Millennium BPE.
