Shown here is one side of a relatively ancient Dida tube skirt conceived and executed on a grand scale. This cloth is woven from fiber gathered from the raffia palm and patterned by the tie-dye technique often known by its Japanese name of shibori (or palangi in Indonesian). It presents a window on both the aesthetic and technical virtues of textiles of West Africa, from the pre-strip loom, pre-cotton era. With some indigenous repairs.
