Lukkus-Pintoan Headhunter Costume 10541
Atayal People, Taiwan
Ramie, raveled trade wool, shell disk beads
19th/early 20th Century
40 x 20 in/102 x 51 cm

Robes of this type are the most important of Taiwan Aboriginal Costumes and were exclusively worn by a successful headhunter of the Atayal tribe. Exceptionally rare, they are profoundly labor intensive to create. The red color represents the Blood of Life, the linear geometry of the beading, the Rainbow Path to the Ancestors. The hand pierced and shaped shell beads represent hundreds if not thousands of hours of stored value.
