Suahu Noblewoman's Comb
18th/19th Century
From an old Dutch Collection

4x3.75 in/10x9.5 cm

Combs from Nias are exceptionally rare, only the famous Leiden Museum example can compare. Such combs served as the equivalent of a crown in other societies, restricted exclusively to noble ladies and queens. This example displays a classical architecture of Nias, with serrated leaf elements and knobs at both ends. This piece is reported to have arrived in the Netherlands before the First World War
