Pagar Protective Charm

Batak People, Sumatra

Wood, hair

19th Century

27 in/68.5 cm

A relatively large pagar in classic pose with deep patina, this figure well pre-dates missionary contact. The hole for the magical organic material called puk puk still shows something present. This figure was collected in situ and brought back to the Netherlands by a Dutch civil engineer who was building bridges in Sumatra in the late 1950’s.
