Red Hindu Mask, Portrait of a Deity 10738

West Bengal, India

Wood, pigment

19th Century or earlier

12 in/30.5 cm

Largely unknown in comparison with the more familiar masks of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, this mask is from West Bengal and most likely is a representation of Shiva based on the characteristic facial style. It is covered with puja powder, making a very thick patina of ritual use on a heavy hard wood base. This mask has a profound presence and is great art. It is the finest example of its type I have ever seen.
