Drum with Spirit Figures

Elema People, Papuan Gulf, Papua New Guinea

Wood, skin, pigment

Early 20th Century

22.5x5 in/57x13 cm

An exceptionally beautiful musical instrument that would be beaten to produce a trance inducing rhythm; from an old Dutch Collection provenance. The sound hole aperture of this drum is in the form of both a shark's mouth and the looming entrance of the great men's houses' Ravi or Eravo. Likely to be carved by the Elema People from the Eastern Papuan Gulf.
