Pinangpanga 11502

Bontoc, Ifugao and Kalinga, Philippines

The Ifugao, Bontoc and Kalinga peoples of the Northern Philippine Mountains wear a simple omega shaped ornament called ling-lingo that in symbolic form represents the female sex and fertility. Presented here is a more complex and rarer version of this earring/pendant called a pinangpanga, which features the heads of deer (or possibly hornbill birds) projecting from both sides. This is the earliest example I have ever encountered, with a great patina of use.
