Ring with Green Stone 10883

Gold, possible emerald

10-16th Century

1.75 in/4.4 cm  25.8 grams

This massive ring displays what might be termed the International Style of its period, being closely related architecturally to rings of the Southeast Asian Mainland from the pre-European contact era. The inset stone appears to be a half bead and there is a chance, first noted by the jewelry expert Edmond Chin, that this stone could be an emerald from Columbia in South America and thereby be an artifact representative of the first galleon trade dating it to the 16th Century.
